Continuing on the theme of #EmbracingEquity, we're talking to Ebony Mystique in this second installment of our International Women’s Day series, celebrating the women who make up our strong and diverse community.

Ebony Mystique is someone who wears many hats. In fact, she probably designed them too! Mystique is a former registered nurse turned celebrity fashion designer. In 2019, she joined the adult industry, turning it on its head when she debuted in major studio films. And that was only the beginning of her success. Since then, she has been nominated for several awards and took home an AVN in 2022. Today, we spoke with her about what International Women’s Day and womanhood mean to her.

What does International Women’s Day mean to you?

International Women’s Day is special. It is a dedicated day of celebration for feminism and femininity. It highlights women in power, who have shown leadership in their personal lives, communities, and workplaces. A bit bittersweet for me, as I think these characteristics should be acknowledged every calendar day of the year. But I am still grateful for at least one.

How has your perception of what being a woman is all about changed over the years?

Body image, having a voice and opinion, and just being respected as equal to men are something women have historically fought for. As we progress over the years, those aspects are still important to women’s rights. Also, I believe more women are advancing toward the entrepreneur lifestyle, showing that women are not only nurturers, but can run the show as well, just as successfully as their male counterparts.

You’re working on an event with the Free Speech Coalition, can you tell us more about it? Why is this kind of work important to you?

Yes! And what an honor! So, I came from the high fashion world before I entered the adult industry. I had seen a fashion show XBIZ Miami put on last year. I missed the event, but I did not miss the response! This led me to contact the producer about my history in fashion, the celebrity clients I have worked with, and my love for the art of fashion.

The rest was history! Next thing I know, we are head on planning a huge charity event fashion show, benefiting FSC & the industry performers in need, and getting major interest from the industry leaders/companies for sponsorship!

This show is not only a charity event, but fashion itself is a form of sexuality. When you’re looking your best, it reflects outwardly. Fashion brings people together in the most creative, uplifting way. It’s a form of self-expression, and sex workers can also be sexy with fabrics adorned. What are the benefits and challenges of joining the adult industry as a woman in your 30s?

I’m 30 something? Are you sure? No seriously, I have to remind myself that I’m 30s MILF’n. Mental, physical, and emotional health are more important to me than before. As far as the adult industry goes, being more sexually experienced and mature has made my time more successful. I’m more strategic and know what I want out of being “Ebony Mystique” and building my brand for more legendary status later. I want to make sure I’m always putting my best in whatever I do, so I haven’t personally noticed many challenges in the adult industry based on age.

What are misconceptions that people tend to have about you or women in the industry and how do you challenge that?

That we are literal f*ck machines. I have been perceived because of my work and status that I have multiple sex partners; I have intercourse 100 times a week and I offer solicitation. I’ve heard the same from other females in my line of mainstream adult work. Truth be told, a simple correction is all that is necessary. Judgement is a whole different subject. Life is simple. I think people complicate things.

Do you think there is still room for improvement in the industry when it comes to embracing equity for women? How would you like to see it improve for women?

Yes. For example, the top male performer was always the “star on set.” There are award-winning female producers, directors, company owners and straight up female BOSSES; dominant females exist now more than ever before, and women feel powerful! But there’s always room for more improvement. Just seeing more female ownership is a beautiful step in the right direction.

Can you tell us a bit about your previous careers; how have they helped shape you into the woman you are now?

I dropped out of my first years of residency and had enough credits to take the nursing board exam and passed! I was a nurse in many fields for over a decade. The gratitude of helping someone maintain life in the healthiest ways possible was extremely rewarding. My female patients from all ages and walks of life taught me something different each time. Women are strong! There is something incredibly special about being a woman. Only those who tap into feminine energy would really understand. The lives a woman assists in carrying and bringing into this world, that in itself is special AF!

Tell us something about you that most people are surprised to learn.

The nursing career and me being retired is a shock to most.

Who are some women you look up to and why?

Angela Davis, Assata Shakur, Maya Angelou, Iyanla Vanzant, Beyoncé. There’s so many. It’s not idol worship, I can honestly say I “look up” to these women. I am really impressed with their dedication and talent, they're so impressionable to so many, and have such a positive influence and gift, especially for women.

What advice do you have for women in their 20s who are just starting their lives and careers whether in the industry or not.

Know who you are and what you want to be known for in this world. Women are created in beautification. Born pre-approved. We do not need approval. Embrace the person you are. Love and believe in yourself so hard that you can’t think of anything else but being the most powerful and respected woman you can be in your life. Remember who you are. You are special. Someone’s daughter, sister, aunt, mother. The first teacher for some. Such an amazing purpose to have.

What has been your favorite achievement/proudest moment in your career so far?

Just being able to share my sexuality and personality with the world so openly. The fact that millions of people are receiving me in a positive way makes my delivery even easier to accomplish. I love my fans, my supporters. You all f*ckin ROCK!! There’s so much more coming up, you will see Ebony Mystique and Pornhub collaborations very soon. I thank you for this opportunity and to all my bad ass women across the world. Happy International Woman’s Day, gorgeous!
